APA-Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) – The election took place on the occasion of the 42nd session of the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in Paris.
Côte d’Ivoire was elected to UNESCO’s Executive Board on November 15, 2023, for a four-year term.
The Executive Board is the decision-making body of UNESCO, which comprises 58 member countries.
It analyses the program of work, the budget estimates to be submitted to the general conference, as well as decisions and candidatures for the post of Director-General of UNESCO, and meets twice a year as required by the statutes.
Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Education and Literacy, Mariatou Kone, will represent the country on the Board. With this election, Côte d’Ivoire becomes one of the major decision-makers of the UN institution.
The 42nd session of UNESCO’s General Conference opened on Tuesday November 7, 2023 at the institution’s headquarters in Paris, in the presence of delegates and representatives of the 194 members and associate members.
On the 2nd day of the conference, Côte d’Ivoire was reappointed to the High-Level Steering Committee for Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4).
Through Minister Mariatou Kone, the country will represent Africa on this body for a two-year term, alongside its counterpart from Ethiopia.
Côte d’Ivoire’s election to UNESCO’s Executive Board and its reappointment to the High-Level Steering Committee for Education, with regard to MDG4, confirm the leadership of the state of Côte d’Ivoire.
