Muslim and Christian leaders in The Gambia have agreed to suspend all religious gatherings in accordance with the ban on public gatherings in the country.
The President of The Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, Muhammad Lamin Touray and executive members of the Council appeared on State TV on Tuesday announcing the suspension of religious gatherings including Congregatioal prayers.
Touray, a popular Islamic scholar in The Gambia said, for the sake of people’s health, Muslims in the country are urged to adhere to the temporary suspension.
The announcement by the Supreme Islamic Council came days after the Christian Council in the country declared a temporal halt on all mass gathering for worship in Churches across the country. According to the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Banjul Dr. Gabriel Mendy, Christian worshipers would joined church services broadcast online by the Gambia pastural Institute.
The Gambia has so far confirmed three case of the Covid-19 pandemic which already killed thousands of people around the world with Europe and China being the worst affected.
The Gambian Ministry of Health Tuesday announced the third confirmed case, two days after the second case patient died from the disease.
