The Member States of the Northern Corridor – Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan and Uganda met in Kigali, Rwanda to assess their joint defense initiatives and examine three new legal frameworks strengthening their security cooperation.
The representatives of the member states of the Northern Corridor (NCIP) met today in Kigali for an important session of the defense cluster.
This meeting, which brings together Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan and Uganda, aims to take stock of the progress of joint defense initiatives and to plan for future actions.
The event, which takes place over two days, focuses particularly on the review of three draft legal frameworks. These documents, developed
last month by the Technical Committee, are part of the broader framework of the mutual defense pact between the member countries.
At the opening ceremony, Brigadier General Célestin Kanyamahanga, Permanent Secretary representing the Minister of Defense, welcomed the commitment of the participating States and underlined the strategic importance of these discussions.
In particular, he highlighted the excellent work of the Technical Committee in preparing the legal frameworks, which will soon be submitted to the steering ministerial committee before their presentation to the Heads of State.
The agreement on the defense cluster reflects a comprehensive approach to regional security, covering a wide range of areas of cooperation.
Among the priority areas are conflict prevention and management, the fight against terrorism, the fight against piracy, and peacekeeping operations. Particular attention is also paid to the prevention of genocide, disaster management and the fight against the traffic of light weapons.
This initiative reflects the will of the member states to strengthen their collaboration in the field of security, in particular through the sharing of intelligence on emerging threats and the coordination of efforts against cross-border crime. This concerted approach aims to guarantee lasting stability in the Northern Corridor region.
