The imminent arrival of Mpox vaccines in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was announced on Friday, 30 August by Dr Tedros Adhanom, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).
The fight against the Mpox epidemic in the DRC is set to reach a new level in the coming days.
During a visit to Kinshasa, Dr Tedros Adhanom, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), announced the imminent arrival of vaccines against the epidemic.
”I have assured the President of the Republic that I will ensure that things move much more quickly and that the vaccines are delivered as soon as possible,” said Dr Tedros, who was received by President Félix Tshisekedi at the Cité de l’Union Africaine on Thursday 29 August.
The WHO Director-General also underlined the collective commitment of his agency and other international partners to support not only the Democratic Republic of Congo, but also other countries affected by the epidemic.
He particularly welcomed President Tshisekedi’s commitment to fighting the pandemic, including the mobilisation of US$ 10 million to accelerate response efforts.
In the wider context of the global health challenges, he stressed the importance of a pandemic treaty.
”Whether it’s Covid or Mpox, one thing is very clear: we need a pandemic treaty by the end of the year. I am very pleased that we are working on the process to stop this pandemic,’ he said.
