The armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo say they have repelled an attack by M23 and RDF rebels.
The army insist they are continuing their mission to defend national sovereignty and restore peace in areas destabilised by fighting.
The FARDC said on Wednesday that they had “successfully” foiled several attempted attacks by M23 rebels and Rwandan Defence Forces (RDF), in flagrant violation of the ceasefire agreement.
The ceasefire, agreed between the Congolese government and the Rwandan-backed M23 rebel movement, was brokered by Angola and came into force at midnight on 4 August 2024. The deal was aimed at putting an end to the fighting in the North Kivu region, where the FARDC and the M23 have been locked in combat since late 2021.
Thanks to exemplary courage and determination, the FARDC said its troops managed to repel the attackers while making significant progress in recapturing towns and villages previously occupied by the rebels.
In its statement, the army reaffirmed its ‘commitment to defend the homeland and restore peace and security in the regions affected by the conflict’, positioning itself as the shield of the Congolese people, determined to protect the country’s sovereignty and repel any threat to the stability of the nation.
