The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development said the latest development followed recommendations of a task team set up in 2013 following another drought that caused widespread hunger in the southern African country.
The team came up with a programme to provide nutrients to promote optimal health, growth and development as well as prevent nutritional deficiencies.
Ministry spokesperson Masego Ramakgathi said the feeding programme for primary schools is geared towards supporting poverty eradication and home-grown feeding initiatives to economically empower and capacitate Batswana to promote micro and small scale entrepreneurship.
“The food commodities to be provided include rooibos tea with bread, peanut butter or jam, boiled eggs, maize meal soft porridge, milk and an orange or an apple,” said Ramakgathi.
He said these meals, based on sufficient nutrients required by pupils, are to be taken by learners daily before commencement of lessons in the morning.
