APA-Accra (Ghana) The ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff have agreed on a date to intervene militarily in Niger Republic if all the other options fail in restoring democratic rule in West African country.
Speaking at the end of the two-day meeting of the Defence Chiefs on the political crisis in Niger Republic on Friday in Accra, Ghana, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Abdel-Fatau Musah stated that ECOWAS “is ready to go to Niger anytime the order is given”.
He assured that the troops across the region “are ready to respond to the call of duty”.
According to him, the intervention date is known and that the meeting have agreed and fine-tuned what will be required for the intervention.
He, however, reiterated the resolve of ECOWAS to engage peacefully with Niger’s military leaders for amicable resolution of the political crisis in their country.
“As we speak, we are still readying a mediation mission into the country, so we have not shut any door,” he added.
Local media reports on Saturday said that the ECOWAS Defence Chiefs also called for the release of the detained President Mohammed Bazoum, his family members and members of his cabinet who are still in detention.
