The strengthening of cooperative relations between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Kingdom dominated the visit by the UK Minister of State for Defence, Lord Vernon Coaker, to the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, in Abuja, Nigeria, on Tuesday 21 January 2025.
Lord Vernon Coaker and Dr Omar Alieu Touray also discussed the many security challenges to peace and stability in the West African region, including terrorism, violent extremism and organised crime.
According to the statement by the ECOWAS Commission, the minister reiterated the United Kingdom’s commitment to further support the efforts of ECOWAS to meet the challenges facing the community and to promote peace, security and stability in the region.
