Ethiopia has failed to reach Africa’s play-offs for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after losing 1-0 to South Africa on Tuesday.
Resurgent Bafana Bafana propelled and they racked up a third win on the trot after a slender 1-0 triumph over Ethiopia at the FNB stadium.
An own-goal in the 11th minute from Walia Ibex’s skipper Getaneh Kebede, who was trying to keep out a header from a corner, gave Bafana Bafana all three points in front of 2,000 fans at the Johansburg’s FNB Stadium.
The win takes Bafan Bafana to ten points, one point ahead of second-placed Ghana, who earlier beat Zimbabwe for the second time in four days.
South Africa, who beat Ghana 1-0 last month, travel to West Africa in the final game of Group G.
Ethiopia, on three points, and Zimbabwe, on one, can no longer qualify for the World Cup, with two matches left which will be played next month.
Both, however, will be at next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
