Ethiopia became a non-permanent member of the UNSC on 1st January 2017 after 185 of the 190 UN member states voted in favour of its membership.
Ethiopia has represented Africa at the United Nations Security Council three times, including in 2017-18.
Ethiopia was one of the founders of the League of Nations founded in January 10, 1920 which later became the United Nations.
As Ethiopia leaves the UNSC, one African country which joins the Security Council for a two-year term beginning this year is South Africa, 2019-2020.
Two other African states are currently members of the UNSC namely, Equatorial Guinea (2018-2019) and Cote d’Ivoire (2018-2019).
