The men’s and women’s marathon records were broken on Sunday at the Barcelona Marathon by Ethiopian Tesfaye Deriba Ketema and Kenyan Sharon Chelimo.
At the Barcelona Marathon on Sunday, Ethiopian Tesfaye Deriba Ketema won the race in 2:04:13, improving the previous marathon record by 48 seconds.
Kenyan Cornelius Kibet Kiplagat took second place in 2:04:54, while his compatriot Enock Onchari finished in third position in 2:05:20.
In the women’s race, Kenyan Sharon Chelimo triumphed in 2:19:33, beating her own personal best by 2 minutes and improving the marathon record by 11 seconds.
Chelimo accelerated in the final 10km to dominate the race. She finished ahead of Ethiopian Yebrgual Melese, who finished second in 2:20:47, and Kenyan Linet Masai, came third in 2:21:01.
