APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) The Ethiopian parliament Tuesday approved the appointment of Melatwork Hailu as chairperson of the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE).
The former CEO of NEBE’s office assumed the top post at the election board, replacing Bartizan Mideksa who resigned as chairman in July.
Hailu was among the two candidates selected by the recruitment committee after screening 54 individuals proposed by the public.
The resolution to confirm her as chairwoman received a majority vote with one abstention during the 9th regular session on Tuesday.
Hailu, who appeared before the House, was sworn in to carry out her responsibilities with loyalty and dedication.
Prior to her appointment, Hailu, an MA graduate from Harvard University in public administration, served as the chief executive officer of the Office board for two years.
She was picked by a committee which was formed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as per the power vested in him by the Constitution and article of the National Election Board of Ethiopia.
