The European Union has expressed its readiness to support dialogue among Mozambique’s political stakeholders as the nation grapples with post-election tensions.
The announcement followed a meeting between President Daniel Chapo and former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane on March 23, which the EU hailed as a positive step toward reconciliation.
In a statement on Wednesday, the EU pledged its commitment to supporting both the dialogue process and the implementation of reforms agreed upon by Mozambican stakeholders.
“The EU is ready to support such dialogue as well as the implementation of reforms agreed among Mozambican stakeholders,” the bloc said.
Mozambique has faced political tensions since its recent elections, with disputes over the outcome of the October 2024 poll and public trust in institutions.
The EU urged all political actors to engage in meaningful dialogue aimed at restoring trust, implementing urgent reforms and addressing the aspirations of the Mozambican people.
These include democratic governance, respect for human rights, sustainable development, and an inclusive economy.
