South Africa’s main opposition parties have agreed to join forces in calling for the impeachment of President Cyril Ramaphosa over the cover-up of a robbery that took place at his Phala Phala farm over two years ago, APA learnt on Monday.
According to Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) deputy president Floyd Shivambu, the opposition parties – except two, GOOD and AL JAMA-AH – met at the weekend to adopt a way forward.
He said it was agreed that Ramaphosa should face parliament’s scrutiny over the incident following an independent panel report now in the hands of the National Assembly.
“We are going to be issuing out a consolidated statement in terms of some of the activities that we are going to be engaging in towards the sitting of the National Assembly on Tuesday – and what will happen thereafter,” Shivambu said.
The House meets on Tuesday to discuss contents of the report which found that Ramaphosa had a case to answer over his breaching of his oath of office in his conduct after the robbery.
The official said the opposition parties expected to be joined by ruling African National Congress (ANC) lawmakers in calls for Ramaphosa to be impeached.
“A substantial number of members of parliament of the ANC, even in an open vote, are going to vote that the impeachment process must go ahead.”
The ANC’s National Executive Committee is meeting on Monday in Johannesburg to decide Ramaphosa’s fate ahead of the National Assembly’s Tuesday meeting in Cape Town.
