The news of the disappearance of the prestigious ‘Carrosse d’Or’
awarded to Malian director Souleymane Cisse at the Cannes Film
Festival in 2023 has caused a stir in Malian public opinion.
This honorary distinction, a symbol of the director’s brilliant career and
cinematographic masterpieces, had aroused immense pride throughout the
country.
The ‘Carrosse d’Or’ was much more than a simple award for Souleymane Cisse. It was a tribute to his hard work, his invaluable contribution to Malian cinema and its artistic representation on the international stage.
His current absence is generating collective emotion and deep indignation among Malians, underlining the importance of finding this national treasure.
In the face of this ordeal, the Minister of Crafts, Culture, the Hotel Industry and Tourism, Andogoly Guindo, has launched a call for general mobilisation, inviting the public authorities and the population to join forces to find the ‘Carrosse d’Or’ and thus reaffirm their attachment to Mali’s cultural and cinematographic wealth.
The trophy was reportedly stolen from the filmmaker’s home in Bamako on the evening of Monday, April 29, 2024.
