The Namibian government has banned the sale and movement of cattle into and out of parts of the northern Zambezi Region following an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in the area.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Directorate of Veterinary Services in the Ministry of Agriculture Water and Forestry said there has been an outbreak of FMD at Kasenu village in the Zambezi Region.
The directorate has declared areas within a 30-kilometer radius of the affected village as controlled areas following the outbreak.
As part of control measures, all permits allowing the movement of cattle into and out of the controlled areas have been cancelled, it said.
FMD is a viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals and is found in all excretions and secretions of infected animals such as milk, semen, urine and dung, and meat.
