APA-Johannesburg (South Africa) Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel has welcomed the announcement by Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) to inject an additional R5.2 billion (about US$ 272 million) to expand its South African operation to include production of hybrid electric vehicles under the Ford Ranger programme.
Patel said production of the Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid electric vehicles is expected to start in the third quarter of 2024.
“We commend Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa for their commitment to embracing cleaner energy solutions,” Patel said.
According to the minister, FMCSA’s decision to invest additional funds into its Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria for the PHEV production demonstrated dedication to building world-class vehicles while contributing to a greener future at the same time.
“This initiative not only supports our national efforts to combat climate change, but also positions South Africa as a key player in the global shift towards sustainable transportation,” Patel said.
He said globally the automotive sector had undergone significant changes necessitating the adoption of cleaner technologies.
He noted that the implementation of relevant policies and legislation supporting the production and uptake of new electric vehicles was vital in encouraging the transition from traditional internal combustion engine vehicles to clean and energy-efficient alternatives.
The vehicles manufactured at the Silverton Assembly Plant would be exported to over 100 markets globally, including the United Kingdom and European Union member states.
