At least four people have died following the collapse of a multistorey building under construction in George in Western Cape province, local authorities announced on Tuesday.
In an update on the incident that occurred on Monday, the George Municipality said four people have been confirmed dead while 24 others have been rescued from the rubble. A further 51 are unaccounted for.
The building collapsed just after 2pm (1200 GMT) on Monday, trapping about 80 construction workers who were on site at the time of the incident.
The municipality said emergency personnel, including police and rescue teams with sniffer dogs, are currently involved in an operation to rescue the construction workers who are still trapped under the rubble.
“Three teams of rescue personnel are working on three different areas within the site of the collapsed building,” the municipality said.
