A Senegalese and a Gambian have been arrested as part of an anti-drug trafficking operation at the Banjul International Airport, the Drug Enforcement Directorate (DLEAG) has said.
Cheikh Fall, a Senegalese resident in Italy, was arrested on Monday evening during baggage screening. Officers from DLEAG and the Joint Airport Interdiction Unit (JAITF) discovered 156 granules of suspected cocaine hidden in his check-in baggage.
The suspect was travelling on SN Brussels Airline with a scheduled stopover from Banjul to Lyon via Casablanca.
A short time earlier, Sacko D.G. Gumaneh, a 29-year-old Gambian resident of Tabokoto, was arrested. The officers found two packages and several quantities of skunk cannabis in his hand luggage.
He was on his way to the United States with a planned stopover in Brussels.
Both men remain in police custody, while investigations are continuing to establish the exact circumstances of this attempt at international drug trafficking.
