An alleged member of President Yahya Jammeh’s hit squad has died in custody in according to The Gambia Armed Forces in a statement on Monday.
The GAF said Brigadier General Bora Colley who voluntarily returned from exile in August died on 9 March 2025 after a brief illness.
”While in custody, his medical condition was assessed and found to require continuous medical monitoring, which was provided by the state. Despite these efforts, he succumbed to his medical condition on 9 March 2025” said the statement.
Brigadier General Colley spent eight years of self-imposed in exile in Guinea-Bissau, and also lived briefly in Senegal’s southern Casamance region.
He was arrested and detained at the Yundum barracks shortly after returning to The Gambia.
He was adversely mentioned multiple times during witness testimonies at the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC) over gross human rights violations during Jammeh’s rule.
The TRRC report had recommended Colley to be prosecuted over the killing and torture of detainees.
Meanwhile, justice minister Dawda Jallow of Justice has applied for an inquest into the circumstance of Colley’s death while in the custody of the GAF to ascertain the actual cause of his demise.
