According to a statement from the Office of the President on Tuesday, Barrow’s talks with the Spanish diplomat revolved around creating jobs for Gambians around sectors such as tourism and agriculture.
The talks were held behind closed-doors at State House, said the statement.
The visit to Banjul by the Spanish Foreign minister comes against the backdrop of a serious controversy caused by the deportation from Europe in recent weeks of scores of Gambians.
Some of the deportees and their relatives have blamed the government for ostensibly facilitating their return to the country against their expressed wish.
Some of the returnees have given lurid details of their alleged mistreatment by European immigration officials.
Spain is a favourite destination for Gambians leaving their country for Europe, which is struggling to deal with a permanent wave of migrant exodus from sub-Saharan African to its shores.
The Gambia disproportionately contributes thousands of mostly economic migrants to this exodus to European Union countries such as Spain, Italy, Germany and France every year.
