Gambia’s main National Water and Electricity Company (Nawec) in a statement seen by APA on Tuesday says it is taking disciplinary measures against two top officials for alleged involvement in corruption.
The services of Nawec’s treasury manager Babucarr Secka were terminated while its director of finance Cherno Omar Cham was suspended after their telephone conversation with an Indian supplier soliciting bribes to the tune of D3. million was leaked on social media.
The conversation was for the supply of 400, 000 meters of electric cables from Devya Trading.
It is alleged that the officials had instructed the Indian supplier to inflate the invoice for some kickbacks.
Nawec says the conversation involved ”unauthorised financial arrangements” which constitutes a violation of company regulations and ethical standards.
”Nawec has a zero tolerance stance on unethical practices and a strong commitment to transparency, accountability and the protection of public resources” its statement says.
The utility company has since involved the police in the investigation, saying the officials in question were invited for interrogation over the conversation.
It says if the allegations are found to be true, legal action would be taken against those involved.
