APA-Accra (Ghana) At least seven miners are now known to have died after a mine in Ghana’s Eastern Region collapsed over the weekend, APA can report.
Witnesses say 17 other miners are being trapped under the rubble in Birim North District as rescuers among them colleagues attempt to reach them.
Two miners have been pulled to safety during the rescue attempt, the witnesses add.
The mine collapse happened amidst heavy torrental rain during the weekend and many are blaming the wet condition for the tragedy on the illegal mine.
The Ghanaian government has been waging a war on Illegal mining locally known as galamsey but such mines without proper safety regulations are dotted all over the country.
