Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani stressed, Tuesday in Nouakchott, the urgency of
promoting dialogue and reconciliation to address the conflicts and extremism that are shaking the African continent.
The 5th African Conference for the Promotion of Peace, organized over three days in Nouakchott, is the result of a partnership between the Mauritanian government and the Abu Dhabi Peace Forum. Under the theme: “The African continent: The Duty of Dialogue and The Relevance of Reconciliation,” it focuses on the challenges of dialogue for peace in Africa.
For the Mauritanian president, dialogue is an essential pillar for the security and stability of African societies, by consolidating the values of openness, tolerance and moderation.
“Far from being a simple crisis mechanism, it must become an integral part of political and social governance systems,” he noted, specifying that in Mauritania, it has been integrated as a foundation of living together, with a collective commitment to reduce divisions and counter hate speech and fear.
In his speech, he also stressed the importance of drawing inspiration from African traditions for reconciliation and conflict resolution.
These historical practices, according to him, offer sustainable solutions to promote social harmony and establish a balance based on social justice and equal rights.
The conference brought together many personalities, including Jeannot Ahoussou-Kouadio, representative of Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, as well as ministers, academics and representatives of international organisations.
The common objective is to strengthen the dissemination of the values of dialogue and peace through intellectual and practical contributions.
