The East African country was plunged into a protracted blackout after the national grid experienced technical problems and was forced to shut down in the wee hours of Monday.
The electricity crisis in Tanzania came to a head on Monday when power went off nationwide.
According to the state-owned Tanesco company, the outage which also affected some islands was due to a technical problem which developed at its hydroelectric power plant in Kidatu, central Tanzania.
The reason for the outage stemmed from a failure in the system of controlling the water level in the washing power plants and thus failing to prevent a large flow of water entering the plants causing them to shut off to protect themselves.
Tanesco said the situation had gradually normalised by Monday evening as energy workers were scrambled to the plant to restore power, bringing a premature end to their Easter holiday.
”The water intake control systems at Kidatu Station, which got defective, have been replaced and replaced with another one and the work to drain the water that entered the operating rooms is ongoing as well as beginning the process of turning on the power washing machines” a Tanesco statement said.
Although electricity supply has been largely restored nationwide by Monday evening, some parts of the country still complain of a persistent outage on Tuesday morning.
