APA-Conakry (Guinée) While the authorities have yet to make a statement, security sources put the number of casualties at around ten.
A fire of unknown origin broke out at the ‘Société Guinéenne de Pétrole’s’ main hydrocarbon depot in Kaloum, in the center of the capital, Conakry. The powerful explosion occurred during the night of December 17-18.
According to security sources, at least ten people were killed. The same sources added that around a hundred people had already been injured, including 15 women.
In a press release, the Government expressed its deep concern at this event, “the scale and consequences of which could have a direct impact on the population.”
Pending control of the fire, the authorities have announced measures to be observed in the Greater Conakry area for today, Monday December 18.
“Public and private sector workers, with the exception of the defense and security forces and the medical profession, are invited to stay at home; public and private schools are also closed and service stations are closed, except for emergency services,” the government announced.
The authorities have also asked people living on the outskirts of the fuel depot to move away from the site, not only for their own safety but also to allow the services to operate in complete safety.
“In the next few hours, a progress report will be issued and an investigation will be launched to determine the causes and responsibilities,” said the Guinean government.
