A horrific head-on collision has killed 11 people in South Africa’s Northern Cape province at the weekend, the Police Service said on Monday.
According to the police, the collision between two light motor vehicles in the Northern Cape provincial town of Mothibistad took place along the Kuruman/Vryburg roads on Sunday afternoon.
Arriving on the scene shortly after the accident, an ER24 emergency services spokesperson said they found the wreckage of the two vehicles in the middle of the road, with one passenger thrown out one of them — dead.
Ten others — five in each car — were trapped in the wreckage after succumbing to their injuries, the spokesperson said.
“Debris from the two vehicles was spread across the scene,” the spokesperson said. “Nothing could be done for them. They were declared dead on the spot.”
Police in Mothibistad said they were investigating a case of culpable homicide in the wake of the head-on collision.
