During the Ministry of Information and Civic Education’s weekly press briefing, ICPNC Executive Secretary Madam Hawa Sally Samai announced a comprehensive fragility study across all 190 chiefdoms in the country. This study will delve into the root causes of conflict, enabling the commission to develop targeted strategies for building sustainable peace.
Madam Samai emphasized the importance of transitioning from “negative peace” – the mere absence of violence – to “positive peace,” characterized by sustainable harmony and inclusivity. She highlighted the crucial role played by citizens, particularly media practitioners, in fostering a peaceful environment. She commended journalists, bloggers, and social media influencers for their efforts in countering hate speech and promoting positive messages.
Regarding the implementation of the National Unity Agreement, Madam Samai reported that seven out of eight resolutions have been fully implemented. She noted that President Julius Maada Bio has prioritized the remaining resolution related to salary backlog payments, demonstrating the government’s commitment to fulfilling the agreement’s objectives.
To address concerns raised by the All People’s Congress (APC) regarding the arrest of some party members, a joint committee comprising representatives from the government and the APC has been established. This committee aims to address these concerns amicably, fostering dialogue and mutual understanding among political stakeholders.
Madam Samai’s address underscored the importance of collective efforts in maintaining peace and unity in Sierra Leone. By identifying and addressing the root causes of conflict, promoting constructive dialogue, and fostering a culture of peace, the ICPNC aims to build a more stable and inclusive future for all citizens.
