Japan has availed a US$12.4 million grant to assist Lesotho to improve its energy security through rehabilitation of small hydropower projects in the southern African country.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) said on Wednesday that it had signed a grant agreement with the government of Lesotho “to provide grant aid of up to 1.415 billion yen for the Project for Small Hydropower Improvement.”
“Under this project, small-hydropower generation facilities at Katse Dam will be rehabilitated based on Japanese technologies with the aims of supplying stable power,” the agency said in a statement.
The project is expected to contribute to the development of renewable energy in Lesotho and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal number 7 that deals with access to sustainable energy.
