Haiti is in the midst of a deep crisis marked by widespread gang violence, chronic political instability and endemic poverty.
Kenya’s President William Ruto has pledged Kenya’s commitment to the mission to support security in Haiti, underscoring the importance of his country’s commitment to global peacekeeping.
“Kenya has a strong track record in peacekeeping and conflict resolution around the world. The presence of our police officers in Haiti will bring relief to the men, women and children, whose lives have been shattered by gang violence. We will work with the international community to bring lasting stability to Haiti,” the Kenyan leader posted on X on Monday, June 24.
This statement was made during the pre-deployment briefing of the first contingent of Kenyan police officers for the Multinational
Security Support Mission in Haiti, held at the Administrative Police Training College in Embakasi, 18 kilometres south-east of Nairobi.
The aim of the mission is to provide direct support to the Haitian people, who have been hard hit by gang violence, by building local capacity and working closely with the international community to bring lasting peace to the country.
Haiti is in a deep crisis, characterised by widespread gang violence, chronic political instability and endemic poverty. Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021, the country has faced a power vacuum that has exacerbated the chaos. Gangs control large swathes of the country, making daily life dangerous for citizens.
