Stakeholders in the fight against cancer in Kenya remain upbeat that the country is on the right trajectory amid enhanced efforts to address the health challenge.
Speaking in Naivasha at the start on Friday of a two-day National Cancer stakeholders’ retreat, COG Health committee chair, and also the Kisumu Governor, Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o said the country has witnessed intensified efforts aimed at addressing the challenge.
He called for more investment and enhanced collaboration with the private sector to deal with the scourge.
“There is a major role for all of us in placing preventive health as a central pillar to our health services, cancer included” the Governor of Kisumu said.
“Let us focus on the new UHC and NHIF and see how they can work together to support primary healthcare to deal conclusively with cancer” the Kisumu Governor added.
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in Kenya where the annual incidence of the disease is estimated at 28, 000 new cases.
The yearly mortality rate is 22 000 cases or 78.5 percent of cancer victims.
