Parts of South Africa’s commercial capital Johannesburg were rattled by a 3.3 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday morning.
The Council for GeoScience in South Africa has confirmed that it recorded an earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter Scale, with the tremor occurring around 6.30am (0430 GMT) in the West Rand.
“If we get earthquakes beyond a local magnitude scale of 4 that should be a cause for concern because according to our standards you’re actually starting to go into huge magnitude scales,” Council for Geoscience chief scientist Eldridge Kgaswane.
The epicentre of the earthquake was located between Carletonville and Westonaria, according to the official.
He said the latest earthquake was likely triggered by mining activity.
