Mali’s transitional government has passed a bill to militarize the National Police and Civil Protection.
On Wednesday, October 5, the Malian transitional government took a major decision.
At the Council of Ministers meeting chaired by Colonel Assimi Goita, a bill on the militarization of the National Police and Civil Protection was adopted.
According to the communiqué of this weekly meeting received by APAnews, “this militarization” stems from “the recommendations of the National Conferences of Reformation and “will allow the deployment of the National Police in areas recaptured by the Army to ensure the security of the population and their property and prevent the return of evil forces.”
“It will be extended to the Civil Protection, which is the second segment of the Ministry of Security and Civil Protection, along with the National Police, to cover the rear of the forces engaged in combat in order to preserve the gains and secure the administration and the population,” the statement said.
The treatment of police officers and civil defense officials who will be engaged in operations was also mentioned. According to the communiqué of the Council of Ministers, they “will enjoy the same benefits as the military.”
