Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister, Army General Younous-Bek Evkurov, conducted a working visit to Mali on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, accompanied by Russia’s Ambassador to Mali, Igor Gromyko.
During his stay, General Evkurov met with Mali’s Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs, Army Corps General Sadio Camara. Their talks focused on a positive assessment of military cooperation between the two nations and steps to further strengthen it. This partnership has already yielded significant progress, notably through the supply of Russian military equipment, enhancing the operational capabilities of the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa).
The Russian delegation was also received by Mali’s junta leader, General Assimi Goïta. In their talks, Deputy Minister Evkurov reviewed the outcomes of Russo-Malian defense and security cooperation, highlighting a shared commitment to deepening this strategic alliance to better address Mali’s current security challenges.
A strengthened military partnership
Mali-Russia cooperation has intensified in recent years, particularly since 2021, with agreements for military equipment supplies and training for Malian forces. These efforts have bolstered Mali’s defense capacity, enabling the recapture of key strategic areas.
General Evkurov’s visit is part of a broader African tour that includes stops in Equatorial Guinea and the Central African Republic. These engagements reflect Russia’s intent to expand its defense and security ties with African nations, offering tailored partnerships to meet each country’s specific needs.
Both Russian and Malian officials expressed satisfaction with the results achieved and reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining and expanding this collaboration.
Looking ahead, the partnership could extend beyond security to encompass economic development and cultural exchanges, further cementing ties between the two nations.
