The Malian army has successfully neutralized Abou Azimane, an influential local jihadist leader, during an operation conducted in the Echell sector, north of Niafunke, in the Timbuktu region.
In addition to neutralizing Abou Azimane, the operation resulted in the elimination of several individuals, the destruction of logistical support networks, and the seizure of various equipment, including components used to manufacture improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Abou Azimane was a notorious figure, wanted for numerous abuses against civilians and repeated attacks on Malian military positions. The General Staff of the Armed Forces confirmed these details in a statement released to the public.
During the operation, Malian forces intercepted a DJI drone bearing the inscriptions “CSP-DPA,” a name previously associated with the Alliance of Northern Rebel Groups. This group has recently rebranded itself as the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).
This successful operation is part of a series of ongoing military actions aimed at securing the Timbuktu region, where armed groups continue to operate despite intensified counter-terrorism efforts.
On January 3rd, the Malian army captured Mahamad Ould Erkehile, alias Abou Rakia, a prominent leader of the Islamic State in the Sahel (ISIS), near Bourem in the Gao region. This arrest, along with the recent surrender of several fighters in the Gourma region, demonstrates the growing strength of the Malian army in its fight against terrorism.
These recent successes reflect the Malian army’s determination to weaken the influence of terrorist groups operating in the northern part of the country.
