Three months after suffering a heart attack that took him out of the public eye, Mali’s transition prime minister, Choguel Maiga appears to be back to work..
Victim of a stroke last August, Maiga, appointed as Prime Minister in June 2021 after the coup by Colonel Assimi Goita against former transition president Bah Ndaw, is believed to have resumed work.
This has been confirmed by several officials at the Prime Minister’s Office, while the Facebook page of the ‘Office de la Radiodiffusion Television Malienne’ (ORTM, public) reports using a picture of him, that there he held an audience with President Colonel Assimi Goita on Friday.
Choguel Maiga posted a photo of himself on social media, accompanied by the message “Al Hamdoulilah” (Praise be to God)..
Meanwhile Goita’s twitter handle also said: ”After a medical retreat of a few months, the President of the transition, His Excellency Colonel Assimi Goita, Head of State, received Dr. Choguel Kokala Maiga, Prime Minister, Head of Government, this Friday”.
The Malian media outlet L’Essor maintains that in reality, the prime minister came to inform the president of the state of his health and to assure him that he was fit to return to work.
Put on forced rest three months ago, Choguel Maïga was replaced by the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga, who was appointed interim PM on August 21.
The Malian government has not yet reacted.
