The president of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani is in Rabat for a private visit as confirmed by a brief statement from Nany Ould Chrougha, the Minister responsible for the President’s Cabinet.
This visit follows a continental education conference held in Nouakchott from December 9-11, 2024.
The Mauritanian leader’s trip comes in the wake of a historic visit by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Mauritania.
Tebboune’s visit marked the first time in over three decades that an Algerian head of state visited Mauritania.
Algeria continues to work towards strengthening ties with Mauritania, with the aim of influencing Nouakchott and limiting Morocco’s influence in the Maghreb region.
However, Mauritanian authorities have maintained a position of good neighbourliness with Rabat, refusing to take sides in its row with Algeria.
In parallel with Tebboune’s visit, Mauritania sent its Parliament President, Mohamed Ould Meguett, on a diplomatic mission to Morocco. Ould Meguett met with several senior Moroccan officials, including Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Mohamed Ould Errachid, President of the Chamber of Councillors.
This series of meetings underscores Mauritania’s desire to maintain a delicate diplomatic balance while asserting its sovereignty in political decisions and international relations.
