At least 10 miners lost their lives and five others sustained injuries following a devastating mine collapse in Mumbwa district of central Zambia on Monday.
Central Province police chief Charity Chanda said the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday as a group of miners engaged in excavation activities at the site.
“During the course of their mining activities, the earth collapsed on them,” Chanda said in a statement.
Rescue efforts led to the recovery of six miners with injuries, while nine died on the spot, she added.
“Unfortunately, one of the six injured miners later succumbed to his injuries.”
Emergency response teams quickly mobilised to the site where they worked tirelessly to rescue those trapped.
The police are collaborating with relevant authorities to determine the exact number of individuals present in the mine at the time of the collapse.
