On Tuesday, the Royal Moroccan Navy and coastal surveillance units intercepted makeshift boats carrying a total of 190 candidates for irregular migration, including 11 women, all sub-Saharan Africans, in the Kingdom’s southern territorial waters between Tan Tan and Dakhla, according to a military source quoted by the Moroccan Press Agency (MAP) on Tuesday.
The rescued people were safely transported to the nearest national ports after receiving the necessary treatment before being handed over to the Royal Gendarmerie for the usual administrative procedures, the source added.
Every week, or even every day, numerous suspected illegal immigrants are rescued by Moroccan naval personnel. The distance between Morocco and Spain is only 14 kilometers.
Many would-be immigrants who want to reach Europe see it as a privileged and quick gateway.
