Morocco has taken the helm of the 57th session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), held from 12 to 18 March.
Its main focus was on accelerating the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement through proposals for transformative strategic actions.
On Wednesday, Morocco was unanimously elected in Addis Ababa to lead the 57th session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development.
This election reflects the confidence of member states in Morocco’s leadership and its commitment to fostering inclusive and dynamic economic governance across the continent.
Under the theme “Accelerating the Implementation of the Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area: Proposals for Transformative Strategic Actions,” the session will also tackle critical issues such as digitalisation, technology, food security, and energy transformation.
The session kicked off with the Committee of Experts meeting from 12 to 14 March, followed by side events scheduled for 15 and 16 March. The ministerial segment will take place on 17 and 18 March.
Discussions will focus on assessing progress in implementing the AfCFTA Agreement since it entered into force in 2019 and trading under its rules began in January 2021. The session will also examine the socio-economic, energy, and climate impacts of its rollout on African economies and societies, according to the UN ECA.
