Morocco expresses its full solidarity with Libya following the rainstorm and floods that have brought cataclysmic death and destruction in some regions of the country.
A statement by the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses ”deep and sincere sympathy to the state of Libya, its brotherly people and the families of the victims of this harsh ordeal, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured”.
Over the past few days, Libya has been grappling with the devastating floods caused by Storm “Daniel”, which left a heavy toll in human lives and significant material damage in the affected regions.
Thousands of people have died in the storms that hit eastern Libya with full force, prompting the authorities to declare a state of emergency, close schools and businesses, and impose a curfew in the affected regions.
The authorities also called for the evacuation of coastal areas and the closure of all businesses near the Libyan coast and low-lying areas near rivers. With houses submerged or destroyed by floodwaters, civilians trapped on the roofs of their cars, mudslides and fierce winds, the images circulating on the Internet give a good idea of the extensive damage the Mediterranean storm has inflicted on towns such as Shahat, El Beida and Susah.
On Monday, the Libyan Interior Ministry announced the deployment of 1,000 fully equipped security forces to the eastern region, where certain localities have been declared disaster areas.
A three-day period of national mourning was declared in Libya on Monday in memory of the victims of flooding in the eastern region of the country after “Daniel” made landfall.
