APA-Rabat (Morocco) – The office of the public prosecutor at the Court of Appeal in Kenitra, some fifty kilometres north of the Moroccan capital Rabat, has reported that seven people have been imprisoned.
The tainted alcohol affair that is shaking Morocco is experiencing its first judicial consequences. On Friday, an eighth person was placed under judicial supervision. This decision follows an investigation into the tragic deaths of several individuals after ingesting a toxic substance in the Sidi Allal Tazi region of Kenitra.
The case, revealed by social media, established that the victims had consumed methanol, a toxic alcohol. This consumption led to the death of some, while others were allowed to leave hospital after treatment.
Several victims are still under medical observation.
Investigators discovered that the methanol had been acquired from high-proof alcohol retailers, before being sold by dealers at a local celebration. Many attendees reported painful post-ingestion symptoms, and for some the outcome was fatal.
In response, the Moroccan Public Prosecutor’s Office demanded a full investigation of those suspected of deliberately distributing dangerous substances, resulting in death and disability.
Following the initial hearings, the investigating magistrate ordered the provisional detention of the individuals involved.
