Rights group Amnesty International has called on Mozambican authorities to investigate alleged death threats received by government critic Adriano Nuvunga over his views about the handling of an ongoing armed insurgency in the north of the country.
Nuvunga, who heads the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), claims he has since October 3 received calls from unknown individuals threatening to bomb his house in the capital Maputo.
Amnesty International director for East and Southern Africa, Deprose Muchena said the Mozambican authorities should institute an independent probe into the threats against Nuvunga.
“The threats should not be taken lightly. Mozambican authorities must launch a prompt, independent and impartial investigation into this intimidation and ensure that those who are behind this act are brought to justice in fair trials,” Muchena said.
He said the bomb threats against Nuvunga are aimed at scaring him and other government critics into silence.
The CDD, a civil society organization focusing on democracy, governance and human rights in Mozambique, has been critical of the government’s response to the insurgency in Cabo Delgado province in the wake of video footage showing security forces killing unarmed women and children.
It has been calling for full, independent and impartial investigations into allegations of human rights violations the country’s security forces.
