Mozambique’s sole fuel importer Imopetro on Thursday launched an international public tender to select a supplier of nearly 26,350 tonnes of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to the country.
In a statement, Imopetro, which also acts as a procurement agent for LPG distribution companies, said interested companies should submitted completed tender documents by July 24, accompanied by proof of deposit of a US$100,000 guarantee.
Tender documents are being purchased from the institution for US$10,000.
The quantity represents an increase of about 1,100 tonnes of gas compared to the quantities that the country currently imports.
The National Directorate of Hydrocarbons and Fuels has linked the gas rush to the price of coal, which has made some families radically switch the type of fuel they have been using mainly in urban and suburban areas.
Mozambique is gradually expanding national domestic gas storage and filling capacities, a factor that limits imported volumes in each batch every six months.
It was in this sense that last year an oceanic filling station for gas cylinders began operating in the city of Beira, central Sofala province.
