President Filipe Nyusi was on Sunday evening re-elected head of Mozambique’s governing Frelimo party for another five-year term.
Nyusi was unopposed for the post during the 12th elective congress of Frelimo currently taking place in the city of Matola in Maputo province.
In his acceptance speech, Nyusi vowed “faithfully serve the Frelimo party and the Mozambican homeland and to employ all my energies in the realisation and defence of internal unity and cohesion.”
The former defence minister has been president of Frelimo president since 2017 while he has been head of state since 2015.
He is expected to lead Frelimo until 2027 while his term as the country’s president is due to end in 2025 as the constitution allows for maximum two five-year terms for the head of state.
The congress, which is being attended by more than 2,100 delegates, started on September 23 and is expected to end on Wednesday.
On the agenda is the election of the party’s Central Committee, which will be responsible for choosing the secretary-general and the Political Commission.
