According to WFP, Gaza is being hit hardest by a long drought for the past two years and it (WFP) neads at least €9.7 million for the humanitarian response to Mozambique.
“Although accumulated precipitation improved during the season 2017/18, that period was also marked by a drought as well as heavy rains and the result is agricultural yields are below average, particularly in the south and parts of the central region where an 2 million people are in severe food insecurity severe, that is, they hardly have anything to eat every day. ” reads a WFP document emailed to APA on Thursday.
The WFP document estimates that in the next 40 to 50 days, the number of people with difficulty in having food could be wel above 2 million as corn is being devasted by a plague of army worm.
The former Portuguese colony and the entire southern Africa has also suffered crop damage caused by the El Nino-inspired drought that has wilted crops, slowed economic growth and driven food prices higher.
Severe bouts of dry weather reduced crop yields in the 2018 harvest in parts of southern and central Mozambique, but abundant rains led to unexpectedly large yields in other parts of the country of 28 million people.
