The Minister of the Interior, Sidiki Kaba, on Monday presented President Sall, with the report of the so-called National Dialogue held a week earlier at the Abdou Diouf International Conference Centre in Diamniadio (CICAD), some thirty kilometres east of Dakar.
“The report of the national dialogue was presented to President Macky Sall on Monday. He intends to ask the Constitutional Court for its opinion on the date of the elections and the period after 2 April. The Head of State also praised the Senegalese genius for overcoming difficulties,” according to the Senegalese Presidency.
President Sall had convened the talks on 26 and 27 February to allow all the components of Senegalese society to decide on a new date for the presidential election, which was initially scheduled for 25 February 2024.
At the end of two days of discussions, the participants proposed that the presidential election be held on 2 June, with the current president’s term extended until his successor takes office.
Sall, who had already confirmed in an interview with local media that his stint as head of state would end on 2 April, reiterated his firm intention to leave power at the end of his second and final term.
The ball is now in the court of the constitutional court, which will have to rule on this issue and find the best formula to avoid a power vacuum.
