APA-Dakar (Senegal) Senegal’s new head of state is preparing to make further visits in the immediate vicinity, on the heels of first trip to Mauritania.
After his half-day visit to Nouakchott last Thursday, the Senegalese President is expected in Banjul on Saturday 20 April. This is the second leg of his tour since taking office as head of state on 2 April, following his visit to Mauritania.
The aim of this trip is to consolidate ties of good neighbourliness and socio-cultural rapprochement with Senegal’s neighbours, notably Gambia, Mauritania, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Mali.
On his arrival in Nouakchott on Thursday, President Faye was warmly welcomed by his Mauritanian counterpart Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, who is also the current chair of the African Union.
During their face-to-face talks, they discussed ways of developing and strengthening bilateral relations in various fields, particularly the economy. Senegal and Mauritania share a major offshore gas field.
In addition to Mauritania and Gambia, President Faye announced at the last Council of Ministers his intention to visit heads of state of other neighbouring countries with a view to maintaining and strengthening cordial relations with them.
