Members of Niger’s committees holding national consultations over the length of the transition have stopped short of revealing their conclusions.
The duration of the political transition was at the heart of the national discourse on Tuesday, February 18.
According to Tsalha Haladou, who chairs the economy sub-committee, this “cross-cutting issue” was debated in all the working groups, alongside the charter that will govern this period 19 months after the military came to power through a coup against Mohamed Bazoum.
The three sub-committees — economy and sustainable development, geopolitics and the international environment, justice and human rights — have integrated their recommendations on this point into their respective reports. These proposals will be submitted to the National Commission on Wednesday for validation.
This question directly responds to one of the four objectives set on Saturday by General Abdourahamane Tiani during the launch of the meetings. The president of the CNSP and head of state of Niger then explicitly asked the participants to “define the length of the transition” among the priorities of the work.
The conclusions on this crucial point will not be made public until after validation by the National Commission, by Wednesday or Thursday, according to Mr. Haladou.
