Millions of Nigerians were thrown into darkness for hours on Wednesday when the country experienced another collapse of the national grid.
According to some officials of the power generation companies, the grid lost power generation around 11:34 am on Wednesday.
The officials explained that there was a general grid disturbance leading to a trip-off and the power went off before noon.
Most power plants on the grid lost generation when the incident occurred, the officials said.
They added that the Egbin power plant lost 600 megawatts of power; Azura Edo lost over 400MW; Geregu lost about 200MW; Olorunshogo, 180MW; Jebba, 400MW; Omotosho, 180MW; Paras Energy, 100MW, among others.
The report by Punch newspaper on Thursday said that at 11 am, on Wednesday, hourly power generation was 4064 megawatts, but this dropped to 1,203MW at 12 pm and 0.00MW at 1 pm.
It added that the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the development on its X handle,
“Dear valued customer, we regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 am today causing a power outage across our franchise areas.
“While gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to serve you better.”
Similarly, Ikeja Disco said, “Dear esteemed customer, please be informed that we experienced a system outage today 12th February 2025, at 11:34hrs affecting all our feeders.
“Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders. Kindly bear with us.”
According to the report, this is about the first time the grid will collapse in 2025 after it experienced a line tripping on January 11. The Transmission Company of Nigeria said that the power fluctuations experienced in some parts of the country on January 11 were caused by line tripping.
In 2024, the grid collapsed 12 times and over 100 times in 10 years.
